CLIG的CEO刘如银说:我们想把国内的重症、疑难杂病,通过我们投资的深科技医疗项目进行检测,在美国顶级的医疗机构进行对接,让病人得到救治。我们会选择对路的医院和医生,同时还要价钱相对便宜的,帮病人降低成本。

和一般的孵化器都是做很前期的项目不同的是,CLIG寻找在美国做得比较成熟的,可以拿到国内发展的项目到CL创新中心,以期促进中国经济发展。刘如银说:“我们致力于做中美投资合作的桥梁。我们在美国寻找高科技的项目,引到国内,目标是发展中国的经济。美国成熟一个项目,就落地中国一个。”

与此同时,CLIG组建了CL创新学院,聚集了一批全美卓越人才成为创新学院导师,包括美国知名上市公司CEO,哈佛、斯坦福等名校教授等。这些导师不仅为投资的项目做服务,而且探讨如何为中国的企业做服务,以后将在线上为中国的中小企业转型、科技进步和发展方向做义务的咨询服务。

刘如银认为:做投资最需要的是多交流,聚集人才。在交流中就会有新发现。他说:“比如一个基因测序的项目,就是我和斯坦福大学一位教授交流时谈起来的。他说这个项目已经做了六年了。我就请他到创新学院来,就有了更多交流合作。”

怎么寻找优秀企业呢?他认为:首先,这个企业的科技一定要是世界领先的。或者模式领先,或者是科技领先。其次,整个发展空间要大,最好是能有全球的市场。“我们现在位于硅谷的好处就是,硅谷面对的是全球市场。”

为了把CL国际医疗公司做好,刘如银和团队去哈佛医学院、麻省总医学院和斯坦福医学院等知名医院和医生建立合作关系。进入一个新领域,需要多接触人,多接触项目,看成功的企业怎么做的。刘如银注重看书学习。象彼得·蒂尔写的《从零到一》,他看了两遍。他说:“学习新的东西,自己不断地得到了充实。这样最有成就感。”

通过移动互联网技术、智能穿戴技术,医生树平台上医生与患者交流病情,监测患者的体征信息,形成专业的完善的健康档案分析数据。刘如银谈到:有一次,在一个朋友圈里,有人问认不认识斯坦福医院的专家,他的一个亲戚得了肺癌。我们的医生树平台就找到斯坦福医学院的钱湘教授,给病人进行诊治。对方非常感谢。这样类似的例子有不少,都鼓舞着我们继续将医疗健康这项有利众生的事业做好。

CLIG的计划是通过科技医疗检测、医生树沟通服务、CL国际医疗,运用科技医疗加互联网的方式,逐步打造一个国际化的大健康服务生态体系。

LAS VEGAS, NV – August 17, 2015 – For the first time in decades, the Federal government is allowing farmers to cultivate hemp. As of Wednesday, January 29, 2014, pursuant to the passage of the farm bill, the cultivation of industrial hemp is legal on a Federal level and is clearing the way for industrial hemp pilot programs in states such as Colorado, Washington, California, Kentucky, Maine, Montana, North Dakota, Oregon, Vermont and West Virginia, where growing the plant is legal.

The bill was originally introduced as an amendment by Representatives Jared Polis (D-CO), Thomas Massie (R-KY) and Earl Blumenauer (D-OR). The provision allows universities, and now also state departments of agriculture, to grow hemp for academic or agricultural research purposes, however, it only applies to states where industrial hemp farming is already legal under state law.

Senator Mitch McConnell, who worked to retain and strengthen the provision was the lead negotiator in getting hemp included on the Farm Bill was quoted, “We are laying the groundwork for a new commodity market for Kentucky farmers.”

Bruce Perlowin, CEO of Hemp, Inc. said, “I said it before and I’ll say it again… these are monumental steps for the industry. What we are all trying to get people to understand is that this will finally unlock a clean ‘American Industrial Revolution’ that will not only be economically sound, but environmentally advantageous.” Soon companies like Hemp, Inc. (OTC:HEMP) will not have to import their hemp fabrics, hemp seeds, hemp hearts and hemp hurd for their hemp products.

According to the Associate Press article, written by Kristen Wyatt, “The plant’s return to legitimacy could clear the way for U.S. farmers to compete in an industry currently dominated by China. Even though it hasn’t been grown in the U.S., the country is one of the fastest-growing hemp markets.”

In 2011, the U.S. imported $11.5 million worth of legal hemp products, up from $1.4 million in 2000. Most of that growth was seen in hemp seed and hemp oil, which finds its way into granola bars and other products.” Other estimates place the U.S. 2013 hemp sales at half a billion dollars ($500 million).

Hemp has thousands of uses. From rope and clothing to soap and lotions and nutritional additives in everything from milk to cooking oil. Presidents George Washington and Thomas Jefferson grew hemp before the Federal government banned the plant in its anti-drug efforts through the 1970 Controlled Substances Act. According to the aformentioned article, it wasn’t until 1999 that the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) issued a hemp permit for an experimental plot in Hawaii on a quarter acre of land.

Now the passing of the farm bill is a big first step towards allowing American farmers to once again grow industrial hemp, and giving Hemp, Inc. enormous new economic opportunities.

American investors left in lurch with proposed Chinese management buyout

NEW YORK, NY – August 17, 2015 – Long-term investors of E-Commerce China Dangdang (NYSE: DANG) (“Dangdang”) aren’t ready to surrender their shares to a potentially forced management buyout and are calling for SEC to investigate. “Shareholders are outraged by the act of Dangdang’s CEO and Chairwoman on July 9th, 2015. The management’s tactics to take unfair advantage of investors should be thoroughly investigated by the SEC.” said investor Susan Reiter of Seattle, Washington. She has been an investor of Dangdang since 2011.

The recent go-private proposal for Dangdang at $7.81/share from Ms. Peggy Yu Yu, Chairwoman of the Board, and Mr. Guoqing Li, CEO of the Company (“Buyer Group”) on July 9th, 2015, has raised questions on what fiduciary duty means to management teams of some Chinese companies.

Buyer Group made the go-private proposal on the morning of July 9th, before the opening of NYSE, a day after Dangdang’s share price just hit a multi-year low after weeks of selling caused by the drastic 35% summer cascade of Shanghai stock market. The buyout offer at $7.81 per ADS share is not only less than half of its $16 IPO price from 2010, but also substantially lower than 52 weeks average price at $10.6 and 30 days average price at $9.55.

In 2014, Dangdang’s CEO Li told Economic weekly magazine that multiple parties were interested in acquiring Dangdang and he chose not to sell the company at $16/share. Li has also publicly stated, both in August of 2014 and January of 2015, that Dangdang’s share price was massively undervalued while it was traded between $12 and $15.

Dangdang’s proposal is in sharp contrast to another recent Chinese go-private transaction on NYSE in July – Xueda Education Group (NYSE: XUE). Xueda’s go-private share price was finalized at 72% premium to its 30 days average share price. Mr. Jingbao Yao, CEO and Chairman of 58.com (NYSE: WUBA), openly called for other U.S.-listed Chinese companies to use Xueda’s transaction as reference when seeking to go private.

Kevin Lu, an entrepreneur of San Francisco and long-term investor of Dangdang, has created a website challenging Buyer Group’s opportunistic tactics (www.dangdangfacts.com) with a public open letter to Dangdang’s Board of Directors. The website has quickly gained tractions among minority shareholders and been featured in six China-based media outlets. Dangdang’s buyout proposal has also triggered online debates on what fiduciary responsibilities really mean to the management team. 

The timing of Dangdang’s management buyout proposal on July 9, 2015 was “particularly opportunistic”, said Lu. Since mid-June, the 35% drop of Shanghai stock market in three weeks had also dragged down most of U.S.-listed shares of Chinese companies. At the closing of July 8th, Dangdang’s share price just tanked 45% over a period of 3 weeks, without any company news.

On the night of July 8th in New York and morning of July 9th in Shanghai, Chinese stock market finally reversed the recent downtrend and rallied up 7% by noon as government announced new stimulus plans.

Recognizing that Dangdang’s stock will move up substantially higher when NYSE opens in just hours, the Buyer Group, apparently decided to take advantage of the time zone difference between Shanghai and New York, submitting the buyout proposal at 6AM EST, after closing of Shanghai market but before the opening of NYSE on July 9th. The proposal specified the $7.81/share buyout price was calculated with 20% premium based on the previous July 8th closing price of $6.51.

“This is bigger than one company event as over 100 Chinese companies are currently listed here,” said Lu. “Allowing management teams of foreign companies to take advantage of time zone difference, at the expense of shareholders, would greatly undermine the fairness of U.S. markets.”

The Buyer Group collectively controls 83% of the shareholder voting power, despite only owning 36% of the company. Dangdang Board of Directors has moved swiftly by appointing a special committee, comprised by the independent directors of the company – Ruby Lu, Ke Zhang, and Xiaolong Li – to evaluate the proposal. The special committee has retained Duff & Phelps LLC as the financial advisor. 

“We remain confident that the special committee members will act in the best interest of shareholders, as required by SEC law.” said Lu, “By comparing to other recent Chinese go-private deals such as Xueda, they should be able to conclude the existing proposal undervalues the company to the detriment of shareholders.”

Now, the first thing you can do to becoming friends with your ex is often quite counter-intuitive and that is to simply stop talking to your ex. Yes, you heard me correctly. Ignoring your ex and shutting down all forms of communication with him or her is one effective means to make your ex miss you. As crazy as that sounds, I promise you that works extremely well. There are several things you can do that can help change the way your ex feels about you and the relationship; one effective method is to remind your ex of the positive aspects of your time together, you can do this on the phone and it’s often easier via text message.

All you need to do is find a logical and justifiable reason to send your ex a text message that will remind them of the happy fun memories that you shared together. Here’s a sample text message you might send to your ex. You might say something like; “Hey, thought I’d give you a quick call to let you know that the Premiere of SPECTRE 007 (James Bond) is starting on Sunday. Thought you should know since the last movie we watched was so good. Thanks, talk soon!”

I can assure you that if you send the right text at the right time, you’ll be well on your way to establishing the proper state of rapport with your ex boyfriend or ex girlfriend to be able to persuade him or her back into your life again.

Get More Intuitive Forecasts with Cycle Weather on Kickstarter

Copenhagen, DK – On August 14 2015, Nik Janfaza launched a Kickstarter campaign for Cycle Weather, a new app for iOS that communicates weather data in a way that is much more simple and visually appealing than most weather apps that are currently available.

“The Cycle Weather app is an effort to design a user interface that presents the user with an appropriate amount of weather data, while keeping it intuitive and simplistic,” the creator explains, “This is done by getting rid of rows and columns of data and replacing it with animated visuals.”

The app essentially fuses the functionality of a weather app with a solar/lunar cycle app. However, unlike most apps that would simply mash together two different app experiences to create a data heavy user interface, the Cycle Weather app instead transforms the data into simplistic visuals. This provides a far more intuitive experience for the user, while still giving clear and complete insight into the data behind the visuals.

Cycle Weather contains all of the useful information you would find in a standard weather app, designed in a way that is not as overwhelming. At a glance users can see information such as location, current weather conditions (along with an animated visual), wind, humidity, and precipitation probability. Glenwood Springs, Colorado – When the Twin Towers collapsed, John Handley’s life was already entering a rocky juncture. In the wake of the attacks and on the heels of a fresh divorce, he decided to take a leap of faith and join a woman he just met to travel across the world to her home country — Myanmar. 

Dr. Anna Khin Khin Kywat, it turned out, is much more than first encounters reveal. She founded the country’s adverting industry, having introduced the concept to Myanmar through major foreign clients.  

In this empathetic and candid memoir, Handley provides a rare glimpse into Myanmar life, utilizing his flare for interpreting cultural norms to develop savvy and transparent business filled with integrity – from creating Myanmar’s most successful HIV/AIDS campaign to being the first foreigner to pass government censors to launching American corporations during the country’s great reopening, a US foreign policy achievement trumpeted as Hillary Clinton’s greatest success. At the time, Handley welcomed the former Secretary of State with a full-page ad during her first visit in 2012. 

Throughout this decade-long journey, we start by witnessing Handley revitalize the country’s advertising industry through a campaign that the Financial Times called “clever, culturally sensitive marketing.” Whether he is scrambling to avoid an imminent banking collapse, parlaying in the “Burmese way of doing business” with politicians or traveling the country with his new-found friends to sell video CDs of his Burmese-inspired songs, Handley comes across as a man on the move. Only after he created a music persona — music being the only work not barred by US sanctions — was he able to break into the market like no foreigner ever has. 

Handley’s Myanmar is one of extreme joy and sacrifice, expressed through the people he meets and comes to love, including his employees who, Handley says, “became like my sons and daughters.”

“He really knows Myanmar,” MRTV-4 has said of him, regarding his best-selling VCD album. But for Handley, in spite the travails of Burmese business amid a crumbling economy, his wife, Dr. Anna Khin Khin Kyawt, was always there to provide moral support.  

Their wait finally paid off in 2011, when sanctions on Myanmar were widely eased. Handley and Anna would then go on to launch major American companies into the “last great frontier,” including P&G, PepsiCo and HP among many many others Such as Samsung and local companies such as CB Bank. But some of these stalwarts of American commerce and the Advertising Agencies he encountered proved to be more of a challenge than he expected. In a trip to the US early in 2014 to secure payments that were in some cases overdue for 9 months, it was then that he decided to do what he could to illustrate practices made by some of the world’s largest companies operating in Myanmar and the disadvantage US citizen’s may have abroad due to higher ethical and legal requirements. 

Prior to leaving Myanmar, Handley even called up a request from the minister of culture, a close friend who he had worked with to ink an agreement for the SEA games, asking if it would be possible to lobby for him to become the first foreigner to obtain Myanmar citizenship. This would allow him to no longer be bound by certain sanctions that otherwise restrict US businessmen abroad and then put him on even footing with the Asean business counterparts. Yet a short visit from his Mother, a US Navy Vet, convinced him to refocuss his sense on the value of being an American. 

But the real revelation transcended the business and political issues when Handley ultimately decides to take an introspective turn to beg the question, “Just how possible is it for Buddhism and advertising to work together?” With a phylosophy demanding not having attachements and the other, advertising, creating them.  Handley attributes it as the major reason for this memior at this time in his life with him funding the effort by tapping his 401k retirement fund to get started.

In a last-ditch attempt to resolve his cognitive dissonance, Handley finally finds solace in Theravada Buddhism with help from his Myanmar friends, who all take to the road in a pilgrimage as monks. Together, donning saffron robes, they confront the aftermath of sectarian violence, but also the conflicts within themselves.

About the Author: John Handley 

John Handley a devotee of Theravada Buddhism, who was the former CEO of SAIL Group of Companies Yangon and previously was a program manager of global repair technology for General Electric. During his 25-year career in power generation, Handley was also the manager of strategic planning and new product development at Alstom.

In Myanmar he is also an singer/songwriter and director  and has won “Best Music Video” and “Audience Choice Award” from the Barebones film festival in Muskogee Oklahoma.

As a Myanmar marketing executive, living in and out of Myanmar since 2001, Handley has gathered a national following drawn to his unique perspective that blends the worlds of art, science and humanity. His first solo album, under the alias U Jon Gyi, sold over 80,000 VCDs nationwide in Myanmar. He is recognized by Myanmar clients as a virtuoso of contemporary Myanmar culture.

AUSTIN, TX – August 24, 2015 –  One man will soon undertake an audacious first: swimming the length of the Pacific Ocean. He will be swimming from Tokyo, Japan to San Francisco, California.

You might not believe this to be a serious proposition until you learn that Ben Lecomte, the groundbreaking swimmer, has already swam the Atlantic Ocean, from Boston to France. 

“Imagine, swimming eight hours each day, eating eight thousand calories per day, and keeping this up for over six months. Anyone hearing about this plan can’t help but be awed. It is truly inspiring, and I think, more than the food, it is fueled by Ben’s passion for bringing awareness to the health of our oceans in an inclusive way,” says Dr. Armin Ellis, Founder of the Exploration Institute and strategic partner with The Longest Swim.

During six months of the swim, Ben Lecomte will have an intimate and unique connection with the Pacific Ocean. He will be able to see and interact with marine life; he will battle with harsh weather conditions, such as the cold water and 15 ft’ waves; and of course, he will see first hand human impact on the oceans. In fact, Ben will be wearing a small device to measure and map the remnants of the radiation in the ocean from the Fukushima disaster.

Dr. Ellis says, “One of the things I really appreciate about Ben’s approach to ocean health is that he is bringing awareness to a serious problem which will impact all of our lives. What is really refreshing though, is that he isn’t pointing fingers, because he believes that everyone and all industries are ultimately going to have to be a part of the solution going forward.”

Part of the journey is to share this adventure with a large number of people. Stop Iran Rally: New Yorkers To Protest Iran Deal at Senator Kirsten Gillibrand’s Office; US Senators Lindsey Graham and Joe Lieberman, Families of Iranian Terror Victims to Speak

NEW YORK, NY – August 25, 2015 – Stop Iran Rally, the grassroots movement that brought 15,000 people to Times Square in July, will protest against the dangerous deal with Iran at Senator Gillibrand’s office in New York City on September 1.

US Republican Senator Lindsey Graham and retired US Democratic Senator Joe Lieberman will headline the bipartisan rally, where they will deliver a landmark foreign policy speech.

Family members of victims of Iranian terror, including the daughter of an Iranian journalist who died a political prisoner and the brother of a US Navy Seal tortured and killed on TWA Flight 847 by Iranian proxy Hezbollah, will also address the thousands of New Yorkers expected to attend the rally.

The nature of evil regimes will be the subject of an important speech by a child survivor of medical experiments and torture at a Nazi labor camp.

“Morale outrage is what New Yorkers feel about this dangerous deal because the Iranian regime has shown itself, since taking the American embassy in 1979, to be vile law breakers with complete disregard for human life,” said Jeffrey Wiesenfeld, one of the volunteer activists coordinating the rally.

“The twisted Iranian regime will treat this deal with the same contempt and disdain they show when hanging hundreds of Iranian homosexuals from cranes in downtown Tehran,” Wiesenfeld said. “This is who America is partnering with, and the stakes are too high to be fooled.”

Senator Gillibrand has pledged to support the deal, while New York’s senior Senator Chuck Schumer, whose office happens to be in the same building, at 780 Third Avenue, opposes the agreement and has argued that America should hold out for better terms.

The Stop Iran Rally is inviting thousands of New Yorkers to show Senator Gillibrand how vital her opposition to this deal is for her constituent voters. The rally’s message is simple: “Vote No.”

Among the many speakers scheduled for September 1, New Yorkers will hear from:

  • Senator Lindsey Graham – Third-Term Republican Senator, Congressman, Air Force Reserve Colonel
  • Senator Joe Lieberman – Chairman of United Against Nuclear Iran, Former Democratic and Independent Senator, serving from 1989 to 2013
  • Banafsheh Zand-Bonazzi – Iranian human rights activist and filmmaker whose father, journalist Siamak Pourzand, was held for a decade as a political prisoner and dissident before killing himself, at 80, while under house arrest.
  • Ken Stethem – Former US Navy SEAL whose brother Robert Stethem, also a Navy Seal, was kidnapped, along with 39 other passengers on TWA Flight 847, then tortured and shot by Iranian terro proxy Hezbollah.
  • Sami Steigmann – Sami is a child survivor of experiments, abuse and torture at the hands of Nazi doctors at labor camp in Mogilev Podolski, Ukraine, during World War II.

Protesters will line the street in front of Senator Gillibrand’s New York office, at 780 Third Avenue, between 49th and 50th Streets. The rally will be from 5:30PM to 7:30PM.

The rally is being organized by the volunteers at the Stop Iran Rally Coalition.

The exhibition will run from September 18 through October 18, 2015 at the Serge Sorokko Gallery.

Eric White is an American visual artist based in New York.  He received a BFA degree from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1990 and served as an adjunct professor at The School of Visual Arts in New York City. In 2010, The New York Foundation for the Arts awarded White a Painting Fellowship.

White’s extensive body of work includes paintings, drawings and sculpture. His paintings are derived from disrupted, cinematic moments where his subjects vacillate between character immersion and audience interaction: the landscape of the film set is just out of reach to the viewer. His work is centered around carefully executed figurative paintings, revealing influences of traditional Surrealism, neo-Realism and Conceptualism. “The paintings and drawings,” writes art critic Leah Ollman of the Los Angeles Times, “strike a resonant chord – nostalgic and at the same time also vaguely futuristic, even dystopian. White, based in New York, has a devilish sense of humor.” 

White’s paintings have been shown in prominent contemporary art galleries in New York, Los Angeles, Paris, Copenhagen, and Milan, amongst others.  His work has been exhibited at the Laguna Art Museum, Museo de la Ciudad de México, Museo d’arte Contemporanea Roma,  The American Visionary Museum in Baltimore, and the Long Beach Museum of Art, to name a few.  A collection of his work, “It Feeds Itself,” was published in 2003, followed by a book based on his solo exhibition “Who Are Parents?” in 2005. White’s first important monograph – an extensive survey of his work – is scheduled to be released by Rizzoli in October 2015.

Serge Sorokko founded the Serge Sorokko Gallery in 1984, building a solid reputation on its collection of post-war and contemporary works by internationally recognized artists. Located in the heart of Union Square in downtown San Francisco, the gallery has introduced collectors to established European and American artists such as Damien Hirst, Ross Bleckner, Sol LeWitt, Donald Sultan, Sean Scully, Antoni Tapies, and Jannis Kounellis.

The gallery has fostered many emerging artists, offering a range of original art from painting and sculpture to works on paper and photography. The Serge Sorokko Gallery has also played a pivotal role in organizing many of the first cultural exchanges between the United States and post-Soviet Russia, including the museum exhibition curated by art critic Donald Kuspit, Painting Beyond the Death of Painting (1989), of celebrated New York artists in Moscow.

LICOR ZONE SA DE CV to sell shares to finance the purchase of several tequila distilleries in Jalisco, Mexico

August 28, 2015 – Tequila continues to gain interest among consumers across the world with the global demand rising significantly each year. Exports of tequila from Mexico increased at a compounded annual growth rate of 4.5 percent over the past five years.1 On the other hand, agave, the raw material used to manufacture tequila, is expected to face a severe shortage in the near future and increase in price by more than 100 percent by 2018.1 Distilleries must equip themselves to mitigate the anticipated risk resulting from this rising cost of raw materials.

Small and medium-sized distilleries are expected to be significantly affected. However, the rise of the raw material’s price should have a lesser effect on large distilleries due to secured agave supply through contract farming. Therefore, these distilleries could explore opportunities to expand their existing manufacturing capabilities during the anticipated crisis situation.

Unable to withstand the rising production cost, a significant number of small and medium-sized distilleries may possibly shut down or be forced sell their facilities between 2015 and 2018. Large distilleries could capitalize on the situation and expand their manufacturing capabilities by leasing, renting or buying these facilities.  This is what Licor Zone will accomplish by grouping several small and medium distilleries under one roof.

Agave production forecast

Agave production is expected to be hit strongly during the 2015-2018 period with crop production dropping approximately 40 percent from the 2011-2014 period.4 The inventories most likely will not satisfy the strong global demand for tequila, leaving Tequila distilleries in Mexico facing a severe shortage of the raw material. Price of the raw material, in turn, could increase by more than 100 percent by 2018 as compared with 2013 prices.4

Tequila demand

The majority of tequila demand in Mexico comes from the export market. In 2013, Mexico exported 76 percent of its total tequila produced.1 There are two types of tequila: 100 percent tequila and tequila bulk, or 51 percent tequila. The former uses only agave as a sweetener and in the latter, only 51 percent of the sugar comes from agave. One hundred percent tequila is not allowed to be exported in bulk, whereas 51 percent tequila may be exported in bulk and bottled in the export destination. As interest for the drink continues to increase globally, demand for both of these tequila types should rise at a rapid pace in the near future.

Demand for the drink is projected to rise with China removing the ban on Mexican 100 percent tequila in 2013. The ban was originally imposed because of tequila’s high methanol content. The United States was the largest importer of tequila until 2012, accounting for approximately 75 percent of the export market for Mexico.5 China is expected to grow as the second largest importer by the end of 2018, importing more than 10 million liters.5 Thus, rising demand for the drink will likely keep the distilleries running at almost 100 percent utilization rates. However, the rising price of the raw material poses a severe threat to the industry.

Agave procurement

Agave procurement differs within the industry based on the size of the distilleries. Large distilleries secure their agave supply by either contract farming on leased land or farming on their own lands, thereby vertically integrating the entire process. These large distilleries secure 80 percent of their agave supply through contract farming. The remaining 20 percent is procured from small, independent farmers to capitalize on low-price situations.

Relatively small distilleries procure all their agave requirements from independent farmers. These distilleries were largely benefited in the past five to seven years and capitalized heavily on the low-price scenario that prevailed in the industry.

However, this situation is expected to reverse during the 2015-2018 period, with agave prices rising significantly. Independent farmers will likely benefit largely from these conditions. At the same time, the large distilleries should be minimally affected due the already contracted farmlands.

Way forward for distilleries

The anticipated price increase of agave is estimated to have mixed effects on the distilleries, depending on the size of the distillery and their current operational modes.

Large distilleries:

Because the large distilleries have their agave supply secured through contract farming, effects on them should be minimal. Those distilleries which generally procure 20 percent of their agave every year from independent farmers should avoid procuring from them in the next three years. Instead, they should procure all their agave requirements from contracted farms at agreed prices.

However, these farmers are expected to demand more for their produce in the coming years as they see their neighboring independent farms earn two to three times more. In such circumstances, the large distilleries must be open to paying a premium on the produce to partially match the prices received by other farmers. This would help avoid contract violations by the farmers. The agave industry has faced situations of contract violations during previous high-price scenarios.

Alternatively, these large distilleries could capitalize on the high-price scenario by acquiring small and medium-sized distilleries that would otherwise shut down, unable to withstand the severe rise in cost in the coming years. This will be discussed in detail toward the end of this article.

Medium-sized distilleries:

While medium-sized distilleries possess the potential to withstand the severe rise in raw material costs, their ability to compete with large distilleries in such high-cost scenarios will decrease. Distilleries which buy all of their requirements from independent farmers must engage in contract farming immediately to mitigate the high-price risk. Farming on their own land would cost more than the anticipated rise in the cost of raw materials. Thus, these distilleries could engage in contract farming on leased land over a period of time at agreed prices.

However, getting farmers to sign a fixed price contract with the prices of agave to ready skyrocket poses a challenge. These distilleries will be forced into a situation of paying high prices to farmers in the next three to four years. They must fix the contract prices at an optimum level that would enable congenial profit margins for the farmers and low price fluctuation risk to the distilleries.


Small distilleries:

Small distilleries are the ones expected to feel the worst effects of the agave shortage in the coming years. These distilleries will not have sufficient funds to engage in contract farming in the current scenario unless they come under the Licor Zone group.

Opportunities for large distilleries:

Although the raw material costs are expected to increase moderately for the larger distilleries, certain opportunities exist for these distilleries to explore. Larger distilleries could have the opportunity to buy, rent or lease these small and medium-sized facilities over a period of time. On the other hand, these large companies could engage in a third-party production agreement for their brands in these facilities.

With the rising demand for premium tequila brands across the globe, large distilleries could be forced to expand their manufacturing capabilities in the near future. Paying marginally higher prices for the raw materials might be unavoidable for the large distilleries in the next three to four years. However, these distilleries could explore such opportunities to scale up their operations to satisfy the rising demand for tequila in the future. The high cost of raw materials incurred during the period could be compensated by increased sales at price premiums resulting from scaled-up productions. Therefore, the price of tequila is expected to rise with the rising cost of raw materials in the near future.

Key inference

The tequila industry must equip itself as soon as possible to withstand the effects of a rise in raw material costs. Small distilleries have already started to sense the brunt of rising raw material prices resulting from speculations. Although a challenge exists for mid-sized distilleries to identify farmers with crops ready for harvest during the 2015-2018 period, contract farming is the only way out for these distilleries. On the other hand, large distilleries that are expected to face minor effects from the rise in cost could explore opportunities to expand their operational capabilities during such crisis situations.
