SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – 27 Jun, 2017 – From the ISTE 2017 Conference in San Antonio, Texas, Level Up Village(LUV) today announced it has added live video chat technology to its Global Communication Platform in order to further enhance the communication and collaboration that takes place between students from across the world in every Level Up Village course.

This new functionality is already being piloted by students in the United States and their global partners in Zimbabwe and will be available to Level Up Village students all over the world starting in September of 2017.

“The addition of video chat technology to our Global Communication Platform represents another big step forward in connecting students globally. It allows for real-time communication in addition to the exchange of asynchronous video messages, personal profiles and project collaboration,” said Level Up Village CEO & Co-Founder Amy McCooe.  “Our goal is to provide a dynamic and authentic experience for students while giving schools everything they need to facilitate global collaboration between their students and partner students at one of our global partner organizations around the world.”

Collaboration in Real Time

In all Level Up Village courses, students communicate and collaborate with their global partners through the exchange of guided asynchronous video messages to discuss the projects they’re working on together as well as their daily life, school routines and more. They also have the option of creating personal profiles and recording additional videos to share with their global partner information about their interests and their country in a fun, engaging format.

Now – in addition to the asynchronous video exchange, personal profiles and project collaboration – students and their global partners will have the option to chat live.

The new video chat technology is seamlessly integrated into the Platform and will further enhance communication between students. These live exchanges, scheduled by teachers on either end of the collaboration, will also serve as an opportunity for students to further build rapport and understanding with their global partner student across the world.

The video chat uses browser-based WebRTC technology and video streaming via SDK, telecom, network and media servers providing by TokBox. LUV’s global communication platform is based on Amazon Web Services (AWS) infrastructure and services.

Children’s Book Illustrated by Tattoo Artist Broadens Appeal of Tattoo-Style Art

Tattoo artist attending Albuquerque’s New Mexico Tattoo Fiesta July 7-9, 2017 illustrates desert-focused children’s book to be available at the event. Two worlds that don’t usually collide- tattooing and children’s literature – bring together those that appreciate art and life in the Southwest.

The New Mexico Tattoo Fiesta will take place at Isleta Resort and Casino July 7-9, 2017 – and clients there to get new ink can also find ink in the form of a book for the children in their lives.

Ed Slocum, voted one of Tucson’s  “Best Tattoo Artists”, has illustrated a charming children’s fable focused on a pack rat, one of the Sonoran Desert’s most notorious residents. Slocum’s black and white illustrations mirror one of his favorite styles of tattooing, a black and grey style almost like charcoal drawings or pen and ink. The book’s illustrations were created digitally on an iPad in between tattoo sessions that make up a very busy schedule of customers who book Slocum sometimes months ahead of time. The illustrations are dark, and reminiscent of children’s stories from decades ago. Not many tattoo artists have illustrated children’s books, but Ed’s talents made him a perfect fit for the job.

“I told my mom about it, and she was very excited to hear I had done this. ‘You’re finally doing what you should be doing!’” Slocum laughed, “Though I’ve been tattooing for 20 years.”

Alanna Roethle (Ray-thlee), Arizona writer, found the right illustrator for her story, which is geared toward younger listeners and children with a third-to-fourth grade reading level, when she became one of Slocum’s tattoo clients. Their collaboration resulted in a book that teaches children about the desert and the plants and animals seen around Arizona, as well as a little more about Neotoma devia, the species of pack rat found only in far western Arizona and northwestern Sonora, Mexico.

“I loved darker stories and illustrations as a child,” Roethle said. “I think the story and style of art bring together two worlds that don’t often collide and I love that about it.”

The book is available in paperback for $8.99 from Amazon, and will be sold at the 3-day festival in Albuquerque.

A Major Milestone in the Fight against Anti-Semitism

After considerable effort on the part of Moshe Kantor and other European Jewish leaders, the European Parliament voted in favour last week of a resolution that establishes an agreed upon definition of anti-Semitism. The resolution adopts the definition established in May 2016 by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) which says that anti-Semitism is: “a certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews. Rhetorical and physical manifestations of anti-Semitism are directed toward Jewish or non-Jewish individuals or their property, toward Jewish community institutions and religious facilities.”

A Monumental Day in the Effort to Protect Jews

Upon adoption of the resolution, Moshe Kantor, President of the European Jewish Congress, said, “This is a monumental day for the fight against hate and the protection of the rights of European Jews.” The Resolution calls upon the 28 member states of the European Union to take all measures to protect their Jewish citizenry, as well as Jewish institutions, from incidences of anti-Semitism, including hate speech and overt acts of violence.

Previously, the only EU members to adopt the IHRA definition of anti-Semitism were the UK, Romania and Austria, even though 28 European Union states are members of the Alliance. Now a precedent is set for all EU members to be proactively engaged in the fight against anti-Semitism, especially through education and public information campaigns, such as Holocaust education in the classrooms and through age-appropriate textbooks. Further, in an effort to build understanding, the Resolution calls for the implementation of cultural education about Jewish history, customs and modern Jewish life, as well as fact-checking existing classroom texts for errors and or material that could lead to hatred and extremist ideologies. Moshe Kantor went on to say, “For too long, Jews were deemed unique, with hate defined by the perpetrators and not by the victims.”

Ronald Lauder, President of the World Jewish Congress also praised the actions of the European Parliament, encouraging member states to take action toward speedy implementation through their individual institutions and municipalities. Lauder stressed the importance of a uniform working definition of anti-Semitism in order to effectively deal with hatred against Jews.

The Resolution also requires member states to pursue law enforcement strategies to identify and prosecute perpetrators of anti-Semitic attacks, to speak out immediately and without hesitation against all incidences of anti-Semitism and to appoint a national team of coordinators charged with developing strategies for fighting against anti-Semitism.

The Lack of a Working Definition Impaired EU Efforts to Combat Anti-Semitism

The Resolution is especially timely in light of the increase in anti-Semitic attacks and wave of hate speech directed toward European Jewry. Jewish groups urged the EU Parliament to pass the Resolution, stating that the absence of a unified definition of anti-Semitism hinders the development and implementation of meaningful and effective strategies to provide security for Europe’s Jewish citizens. A single definition will lead to a unified vision and the strategic use of resources to deal with the rising tide of hatred toward Jews living across Europe they said. In fact, it was these very issues that led to the adoption of a definition of anti-Semitism by the IHRA. The Alliance felt that an accepted definition of anti-Semitism was needed in order to catch behaviours that were otherwise going unchecked and even becoming institutionalized, due to a disagreement over what constitutes anti-Semitism.

Now there is a definition of anti-Semitism. Next step is implementation of policies and enforcement strategies.
