Three special curatorial lectures are taking the visitors of “The golden fleece. The Quest of the Argonauts” exhibition a journey back in time.

On the 19th of May, the 14th edition of the European night of the museums was held in Sofia, in which the National Gallery (‘The Palace’) was also a participant, along with more than 50 museums and galleries in Sofia.

The National Gallery opened its doors for more than 7000 visitors, where significant interest to the public was the exhibition “The golden fleece. The Quest of the Argonauts”, part of the Vassil Bojkov Collection.

The public had the chance to follow the mythical voyage of the Argonauts assisted by 62 artefacts from the private collection of Vasil Bojkov. Guided by three special talks with the curators Dr. Lubava Konova and Elka Panova visitors learned of the stories and secrets that lay behind the precious objects on display.

In the open lectures, the organisers of the exhibition shed light on the relations between history and legends portrayed onto the golden and silver vessels, rhyta, ritual vessels and funerary gifts. They took the numerous lovers of ancient history through a magical quest back in time with the greek superheroes who were part of the crew of the ship Argo, led by Jason, in their pursuit for the Golden Fleece.

Following the traces of the Argonauts through Colchis with their multiple adventures and quests, the exhibition visitors were also introduced to the myths of the Thracian Orpheus, the mighty Heracles, the brave amazons, the founder of the Athenian polis Theseus and his capturing of the Marathon bull as well as the legend of the beautiful Helen of Troy.

Their stories were all presented on the unique vessels from the private collection. Foreign lands and customs of the ancient past were revealed to the exhibition visitors along with some of the secrecy of gold mining in antiquity.

The European Night of Museums, which has been organised by the Ministry of Culture and Communication since 2005, has only for the past few years spread through all countries in Europe. The Bulgarian museums and galleries have participated since its first edition. Children and grown-ups all have the privilege of admiring the abundance of cultural wealth and unsuspected facets of museums of art, history, popular traditions, science in a festive and friendly atmosphere.

Le 3 mai 2018, le professeur Athanasios Sideris, conservateur en chef de la collection Vassil Bojkov, a présenté une conférence d’une heure et demie dans le cadre de l’exposition « La Toison d’or. La quête des Argonautes. », appartenant à la collection Vassil Bojkov.

La conférence « Légendes d’argent. D’Athènes et d’Ionie jusqu’en Thrace et en Scythie » s’est déroulée à la galerie nationale (le palais), à Sofia, et a réuni plus de 150 participants.

Lors de la conférence, le professeur Sideris a évoqué un grand nombre d’artéfacts en argent rares et exceptionnels issus de périodes allant du début de l’époque archaïque jusqu’à la fin de la période hellénistique et provenant d’Ionie, d’Athènes, de Thrace et de Scythie.

La plupart des récipients et ustensiles évoqués faisaient autrefois partie d’un service utilisé lors des symposions et des banquets. Ces libations provenant d’Orient avaient été adoptées par les Grecs et étaient réservées aux membres les plus éminent de la société. Les récipients utilisés étaient donc d’une qualité exceptionnelle.

Les récipients en argent étaient souvent ornés de scènes mythologiques, épiques ou religieuses. Lors de cette conférence, le professeur Sideris a expliqué comment ces scènes étaient généralement adaptées aux traditions et rituels locaux ou comment elles pouvaient servir de propagande politique. Le kylix en argent orné de Thésée et du taureau de Marathon a dû servir à ces fins. Il date de 445-440 av. J.-C. et fait désormais partie de la collection Vasil Bojkov. À l’intérieur de la coupe, la décoration à la feuille d’or représente Thésée domptant le taureau de Marathon.

D’après plusieurs sources antiques, le jeune héros athénien s’était rendu à Marathon, avait capturé le taureau enragé grâce à son bâton et l’avait mené à travers l’Attique jusqu’à l’Acropole, où il l’avait sacrifié à la déesse Athéna.

Après les guerres médiques, Athènes a voulu promulguer Thésée au rang de héros national. Vers la fin des années 70 du cinquième siècle av. J.-C., le général Cimon a rapatrié les « os de Thésée » depuis l’île de Skyros et les a enterrés à Athènes avant d’ériger un autel dédié à ce héros mythologique et de raviver son culte.

Thésée, sa vie et son œuvre sont devenus une expression symbolique des réalisations athéniennes lors des guerres médiques. Pour commémorer la bataille de Marathon, rien de tel qu’un éloge à la capture de l’animal destructeur par Thésée.

Lors de sa conférence, le professeur Sideris a également présenté comment sont acquis et mis en circulation ces objets luxueux, dont la plupart proviennent de la collection Vasil  Bojkov.
