    The National Gallery of Arts in Sofia has recently held an exhibition named The Golden Fleece. Quest of the Argonauts from the 16th of March to the 10th of June. It was a simply astounding exhibition, featuring rare and gorgeous artefacts – 16 of which revealed for the first time in public from Vasil Bojkov‘s personal collection of over 3000. It took you through the same routes Jason and the argonauts went themselves; through Delphi, Samothrace, Thracian kingdoms, Amazon lands, Colchis and Crete. This breathtaking event also showed some Thracian secrets of gold extraction and more. This is one of the biggest exhibitions surrounding ancient Bulgarian Culture.


    A staggering 42,116 visitors took the opportunity to go and see the rare and beautiful collection of artifacts at the exhibition. Families, elderly, adults, younger people, history fanatics, even government officials were amongst the visitors and each and feedback from the exhibition was overwhelmingly positive and was very well received. There were visitors from as many as 45 different countries – this exhibition rivalled many of the most popular museums in the world! Out of all the exhibitions the National Arts Gallery has had, this is one of the most visited of all time. While this may not seem surprising given the magnificence and media attention given to it, this is a huge step in revealing the rich and awe inspiring history of Bulgaria and other formerly Thracian cities.


    The 14th edition of the European Night of Museums was held on the 19th of May in Sofia. It included over 50 other museums and part of this was the National Gallery and The Golden Fleece: Quest of the Argonauts exhibition. 6 times during the night, there were special curator talks with over 600 attendees. These talks connected the history of the artefacts with myths and helped deepen the understanding and adventures followed by the visitors of the exhibition.

    There was also the Legends on Silver lectures by Dr. Athanasios Sideris, wherein he talked about many of the silverware artefacts. Most of them were, interestingly, used as drinking sets and depicted various local myths and legends. Some of them were even used for political purposes.There were also lectures by Ruja Popva during this exhibition; these were with students from a private school and National School of Fine Arts; highlighting how prestigious this exhibition is and how it even has a lot of historical importance.


    As well as all this, there was a nifty 3D map of the national gallery. This event was very well publicised – it was widely presented in the media both in Bulgaria and abroad, for example in the BNT (Bulgarian National Television), Nova TV, BTV and the national geographic site.

    Commenting on the completion of the GLITZKOIN ICO, diamond veteran and CEO Navneet Goenka thanked the participants for their enthusiastic support.     Academician Svetlin Rusev has passed away. Artist, Intellectual, Politician, Public Figure – he leaved a lasting impression on Bulgarian history.

    He died at home from a heart attack, a few days before turning 85.


    Svetlin Rusev was one of Bulgaria’s most prominent 20th and 21st century artists. He completed a degree in painting under Professor Dechko Uzunov. His paintings are highly sought for every exhibition and collection. He has drawn dozens of murals and frescoes, including in the National Palace of Culture and a church in the Rupite Village. Svetlin Rusev actively participated in public and political life. He was chairman of the Union of Bulgarian Artists, director of the National Art Gallery and was elected twice as a BSP Group MP.

    In his last exhibition in Sofia, Svetlin Rusev united many symbols. In one of the paintings, his mother has her back to the living. The painting was made in 2016, shortly after the painter had recovered from a mild heart attack.

    Svetlin Rusev was one of the few MPs who dared to confront their peers, for example Todor Zhivkov (a dictator from Bulgaria’s communist era who was in power from 1945 until 1990), with regard to the construction of the 1300 Years of Bulgaria Monument.


    He managed to earn the trust of those in power, both in the distant and recent past. He was sent by Lyudmila Zhivkova to shop for the National Art Gallery. And it was he who selected the paintings for the modern gallery known as the “Bulgarian Louvre”.

    “The principle on which the whole exhibition is developed, is to search, insofar as possible, for links and commensurability between Bulgarian and European art,” Svetlin Rusev said.

    The artist donated his art collections, taught and funded the publication of books and catalogues. His last exhibition in Moscow is now on its way home. “Bulgaria has lost one of its wise men. A genius artist worshipped by the whole world, he refused to remain inside the ideal world of art. Svetlin Rusev was one of the few people who made us follow our conscience and would not let us turn a blind eye. He did this with a kindness that showed love to people and encouraged them to do good. He was a great man. I am grieving together with you and am grateful to have been lucky enough to have known him. Bless his eternal memory,” Prime Minister Boyko Borisov wrote to Svetlin Rusev’s family and friends.

    In his lifetime, the artist was a member of the Thrace Foundation. The Thrace Foundation is a non-profit organisation founded by Vasil Bojkov in 2004. As soon as it was established, the foundation took an active part in promoting, organising and supporting the preservation of cultural objects that form a part of Bulgaria’s and the world’s cultural heritage.

This correction is to confirm that the expansion is independent of any individual airline, and no preference nor specific allocation of air travel will be given to any airline operating out of Lanseria.

    Correction to Previous News Story

    A previous news publication titled, “Lanseria International Airport in conjunction with Kulula Airlines is set to double passenger number to more than four million” may have caused some confusion among readership.

    While Kulula Airlines is one of the airlines operating out of Lanseria International Airport, this update is to further clarify that Kulula Airline is not working together with Lanseria in regards to the expansion, but is rather one of many airlines that will aid in servicing current and future patrons of the airport during and post expansion efforts.

    Correction: No Airline Given Preferential Treatment

    While no special treatment was indicated in the previous news article, this news update is to clarify that no airline operating out of Lanseria International will be receiving any special treatment or allocation of passengers as it relates to the expansion and growth of the airport.

    Lanseria’s Ambitious Plans for Expansion

    Lanseria International Airport in Johannesburg, which is the fourth largest airport by passenger numbers in South Africa, reports that it hopes to double its passenger number to more than four million. This plan is scheduled to unfold over the course of the next six years, with the additional capacity being serviced by a number of airlines operating out of the airport, including but not limited to, Mango, FlySafair and Kulula Airlines.

    In 2017, Lanseria transported a little over 1.9 million passengers. With competition stemming from 20 other local airports, Lanseria seems well-positioned to accomplish its goal.

    Per Lanseria’s CEO, Rampa Rammopo, the airport hopes to overcome King Shaka International Airport, located in Durban, as South Africa’s third-largest airport. The first and second positions belong to Cape Town International Airport and O.R. Tambo International Airport, respectively.

    While the airport plans to increase its numbers to six million passengers by the year 2027, it has a goal of expansion to 18 million passengers per year, by 2050. In order to achieve this proposed plan for growth, the terminal building of Lanseria airport must be extended. In all, the general arrangement will need to be improved, which includes the transfer of the fuel farm and the airport’s mechanical facilities to another location. 

    Rammopo stated, “There is vacant land where we can develop a hotel as well as an office building”. He clarified that the airport had already completed its first desktop version of the expansion.

    He went on to state that the airport currently accommodated domestic flights; those flights are typically destined for Cape Town, Durban and also George. These routes have been in effect since 1974.

    Airlines that Operate out of Lanseria

    There are three budget airlines that run flights out of Lanseria, one of which is Kulula Airlines. Commercial airlines have been flying out of Lanseria since 2006 with Kulula leading the charge that same year. Kulula flights provide a cost-effective option for travel to domestic locations such as Johannesburg, Cape Town and Port Elizabeth.

    Rammopo stated, “Our vision is to be a regional airport catering mainly for the South African Development Community and the sub-Saharan region”.

    Lanseria has been receiving complaints about the cost of their long-term parking option. Plans are already in place to expand the airport’s parking space. Lanseria will spend R250 million to add an additional 1,000 parking spaces. This expansion will increase the airport’s total number of parking spaces to 4,000. A three-story parking garage will be built opposite the main airport building to facilitate this expansion. Attention has been paid to this issue following phone call saying something must be done about their long-term parking.

    Feasibility of the Project

    Currently, Laneria is designated as a single runway airport. The cost of an additional runway, which could accommodate international airlines, would cost between R1 billion and R2 billion.

    The most recent Gautrain feasibility study reports that the rapid rail facility may eventually include a stop at Lanseria airport; however, this development may not occur for at least another ten years. Rammopo reported that Lanseria is looking at investing in a dedicated cargo facility. Time will tell how quickly these developments come to fruition.

    Lanseria airport is privately owned by the Public Investment Corporation, Nozala Investment Holdings and the Pan African Infrastructure Development Fund.

The Nacra 17 speed sailing boat used in the competition became the competition level of the Rio Olympic Games in 2016, representing the development trend of modern sailing boats, and the newly added hydrofoil Nacra 17 sailing boat will appear in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games and the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
