There are internal drivers that are mainly psychological – the mind of the addict has retreated into the escapism and nihilism offered by addiction behavior because there is some underlying stressor or factor that it can’t process is any other, safer way. There are emotional components which the addict either flees or embraces, leading down the path of self-deception or the path of depression, or sometimes, frequently, both. Untangling the symptoms and effects of addiction is a complex process on any level, but when there are so many components involved in treating a human being who needs assistance psychologically, physiologically and emotionally, there is a great reward in achieving sobriety with any client dedicated to recovery.
Many people enter substance abuse recovery and treatment programs multiple times. Sometimes, there are new and different stressors in the addict’s life that necessitate a revisit to learn or brush up on coping skills. However, it’s much more common that the addict will require further treatment if there is inattention during the first recovery visit to any of the components that make up the whole person treatment approach. Without becoming too focused on the genetic, biological and medical causes and symptoms of addiction, it is possible to structure a program for the treatment of substance abuse that addresses these factors, while still helping the addict accept personal responsibility for behaviors, choices and tendencies that have led to addiction behaviors and ultimately to the challenges most addicts face in life.
The best programs help the addict get settled by initially meeting any medical treatment needs. So many addicts require remedial dental, medical and nutritional care that this is a fundamental part of returning personhood to the client. When the stability of the physical body in treatment has been achieved, it is time to start quickly helping the addict to come to terms with his or her behavior patterns. Regular interaction with a professional and experienced addiction recovery psychotherapist will help any addict to gain a footing from which to approach recovery psychologically. Ongoing one on one therapy should be a focus of any recovery program. In addition to the psychotherapy that will grow the patient’s internal understanding of what brought addiction up, and what can help keep it at bay, regular and directed interaction with other medical professionals on staff can be very important. The best and most intentionally designed programs will include a regular meeting for each client with the medical director overseeing the program.
Family therapy, group therapy, and ongoing medical condition checkups will help the addict in progress toward recovery. Co-treatment approaches to pre-existing medical, mental health and emotional problems which probably had a role in addiction’s presence in the first place, will help the client to gain a significant sense of control and free will, which will render the time and emotional investment in a premium recovery program well worth it. An addict who is seen as a person, a client, and not a patient is the recovery candidate who will have the best chance to remain sober.
