Dubai, UAE – May 8, 2017 – The US government’s cabin laptop ban applies to nine international airlines carrying passengers from northern Africa and Middle East to the US. According to the US’s Department of Homeland Security, the ban is being implemented as a security measure against possible terrorist placing undetectable explosive material in laptops as part of carry-on luggage.

The decision has already raised serious questions on international flight safety. As the ban is imposed on just a select number of flights, it implies all the other flights free from the restriction carry the risk of terrorists boarding the cabin with explosive-filled laptops. It includes all the domestic flights in the US and also flights coming from countries (other than those where the 10 selected airports are located).

“We have reason to be concerned about attempts by terrorist groups to circumvent aviation security…Implementing additional security measures enhances our ability to mitigate further attempts against the overseas aviation industry,” the US DHS noted while explaining its latest decision on the ban.

This explanation clearly points out DHS’ lack of confidence in security checks anywhere really. Homeland Security fears that no security procedures at airport would be able to prevent terrorists with explosives in tablets or laptops from getting on a flight. Ironically, DHS’ ban includes those airports which are renowned for state of the art security and have even been praised by US President Trump himself as “first class” and “incredible” – compared to US airports.

Why is the cabin laptop ban not also imposed on US domestic flights and international flights to the US from other countries?

If protection from terrorists bringing explosive filled laptops into the cabins of flights is believed to be the real reason for the ban, then not placing the same restriction on the other flights actually jeopardizes the lives of the tens of millions of other passengers flying within US or to the US from other nations. The moment terrorists learn of the ban, they will use any one of the 240 airports with direct flights to the States.

On a second thought, the ban cannot prevent the terrorists even when they are flying from the selected countries. Initially, they would check-in their laptops (filled with explosives) in luggage placed in the cargo hold of planes as per the rules.  Once they have landed they could choose any of the 240 airports to get on a direct flight to the US with explosive filled laptops as part of the their carry-ons and then blow-up that plane.

The CEO of International Air Transport Association, Alexandre de Juniac had a most fitting comment in criticizing the US ban: “The current measures are not an acceptable long-term solution to whatever threat they are trying to mitigate.  Even in the short term it is difficult to understand their effectiveness.”

Needless to say, there is a great need for a better and more effective solution. A balanced regulatory framework could be enacted for “extreme vetting” (taking cues from the President himself) of the passengers and their cabin luggage in all airports to detect laptop bombs or any other security threats posed by the terrorists. On the one hand, it would help to identify the terrorists before they get on board – and on the other, there would be extensive screening of laptops to mitigate risks of explosives in the plane.

However, speculation is also rife about another motive behind the ban. According to many, under this pseudo protectionism measure, the Trump administration is actually staging a coup to harm certain international airlines from countries such as the UAE & Qatar. The claims of security risk could be just be to mask its nasty discriminatory actions against particular foreign airports and airlines.

Buzz words: “Emerging innovations”, “Artificial Intelligence”, “Internet of Things”, “Neural Networks”, “Cognitive Computing”, “Cognitive Security”, “Augmented Cyber Reality”, “The Cloud”, “Cyber Neurons” are NOT new, innovative, and emerging relevant, realistic or related technologies.

“All one needs to do is look on the internet, read a newspaper or listen to the news and hear outlandish stories about so-called ‘Cybersecurity solutions’ or seminars,” Mr. Smith, Cybersecurity Master with 21yrs IT expert practicing industry experience explains.

“They are supposed to be fighting an industry of deception, yet their deception is the biggest Cyber-risk of all,” says Mr. Smith.

“In fact the very people that write these articles are instantly making themselves known to those who are real experts, as risks to Cybersecurity. Almost all of the above words are either decades old, and have always existed,” said Mr. Smith. “The ‘Cloud’ is the Internet, and remote execution has existed ever since I was interested in programming 26 years ago. Simply via thin client application hosting, Citrix, VMWare and Remote Storage, these were part of the applications we made as avid Software Engineers when I started,” he said.

“At 11 years old, and commercially at 18, with now 21 years of combined industry experience, it disturbs me to see the industry falling apart by phrases that are being adopted by not even software companies. The ‘Internet of Things’ is another abused word, as the internet was always connected to hardware devices I created, and never with ‘Cybersecurity problems’. It is a myth and sales bluff dreamt up by charlatans simply looking to cash in on what they ‘want to be an emerging innovative rush to market’. The reality is, they are causing the problem, not mitigating it,” Mr. Smith said logically.

Some Company’s seminars coming up with ‘best practices’, ‘ideas’, and ‘products’ have absolutely no speakers with experience in Cybercrime, Cybersecurity or anything related. “They are destroying the industry. These amateurs are trying to jump up 20 years of stairs and look for a shortcut but it is a discipline of many professions, and they are the biggest Cybersecurity risk with their uneducated advice,” Mr. Smith said.

“In a recent forum I saw somebody write the solution to a skills shortage. It was to ‘simply hire lay people’. I responded and said, would you like to have open heart surgery from a Nurse? It seems that the rush to market has already become more important than the traditional SDLC and testing. Companies would rather send a product to the shelves and have teenage ‘amateur hackers’ with no methodology maybe find something than proven methodology under the SDLC. It is no wonder they are hackable,” Mr. Smith said.

“Ideologists jump on Wikipedia and look for the latest ‘buzz word’ and start marketing. I’ve seen them quote semi definitions such as ‘Cognitive computing technology‘ from Wikipedia. If they copy and pasted it properly, you would read at line one that ‘At present, there is no widely agreed upon definition for cognitive computing in either academia or industry,” says Mr. Smith.

“What all these ridiculous words are referring to and the software they are purporting to describe merely replicate ‘Automated Machine Learning’, which I have, and so has many others, been programming over 21 years, and yes if done correctly can make some difference. There is nothing a computer can do that a human does not instruct it to do. It can do it faster, it can learn with methods we tell it how to, but at a risk that if we get it wrong – we make a big ‘fast’ mistake. The only exception to this is algorithms. It is still humanly possible to perform mathematics, and all these so-called ’emerging malware detection’ cognitive human replacements (even if they existed and did work) could do is spot a trend that could help a human spot a reality. However, that is still ‘Automated Machine Learning’,” stated Mr. Smith – who audits ‘IT Experts’ in court as an Expert Witness.

He says, “However, if that was not enough ‘buzz words’, Mr. Smith looks beyond finds claims of Artificial Intelligence, and says “for Artificial Intelligence, we turn to both logic, science and definition. Firstly, what you think it means is impossible and documented as AI (Complete). What it does mean is also logically impossible to rely on and manage tasks such as reasoning, i.e. predicting actions of ‘prior consciousness’ that we humans are born with. In every other sense, it is ‘Machine Learning’. It is well documented that AI differs from Machine Learning because it requires ‘commonsense knowledge’similar to ‘prior consciousness’. By definition, commonsense knowledge “is impossible in general unless the machine is familiar with all the same concepts that an ordinary person is familiar with.”

He then moves on to say, “Now, Pattern Recognition in its context is defined as a form of Machine Learning as it has to know by a human what constitutes a pattern. The definition of Pattern Recognition is “the assignment of a label to a given input value,” said Mr. Smith.

Mr. Smith likens this deceptiveness similar to that he comes across when he encounters Cybercrime, those who are laughing at all of us due to our diversion of reality and ignorance. Mr. Smith, who caught a major Cyberscammer last week, part of a $30-40m crime syndicate, stated, “When I find real life Cyberscammers, Cyberstalkers and Cybercriminals I see real suicides, real cult kidnappings, real hacking, real businesses destroyed, real people facing jail, real child exploitation and real gunpoint horror stories. It is not a game, it is not funny to the victims, so my advice is to the ‘Cyber Marketing Scammers‘ to literally get out before people get hurt.”

Finally, Mr. Smith covers the new ‘buzz word’ that the new breed of ‘Cyber Marketing Scammers’ are resorting to. This was the topic that caused Mr. Smith to warn the industry it is doomed if it doesn’t take a stance. They tend to use the word ‘Cognitive ability‘ and now ‘Neural Networks‘.

Mr. Smith states, “The public should now know that there has only ever been ‘Automated Machine Learning’, but in this case assisted with a Mathematical Algorithm. Some mathematics trends can be predicted, some are impossible. Again, we turn to Wikipedia and it states, “Like other machine learning methods, neural networks have been used to solve a wide variety of tasks, like computer vision and speech recognition, that are difficult to solve using ordinary rule-based programming”. It is also worth mentioning that all these quotes date back to the 1980-90’s. When I say that I am talking about ‘IoT’, ‘Cloud’ and all so-called Emerging Innovations.”

What has changed to cause the increase in Cybercrime?

“Absolutely nothing except laziness, market exploitation, a big rush to market and breaking of the SDLC/eliminating proper testing methodology & care. The writers of these articles and presenters of these seminars are causing a concern. Programmers and product developers need to start getting smarter and do their job and testing properly. Then, the marketers need to wait for a proper SDLC to be undertaken. There are no short rides to become a Cybersecurity expert. Spend 20 years and learn the professions, then you will inherently know the discipline,” Mr. Smith states.

If the truth hurts, deal with it. It has to be a warning to the world from somebody who is on the frontline with expert experience. Not everybody are out to intentionally behave like this, but it is true and it is happening and Mr. Smith is offering this intelligence for no monetary gain. Decision makers (including Government) should do due diligence against those putting out these claims, products or events. Secondly, Cyber Mitigation and stopping insider threats and human mind hacking (social engineering) Mr. Smith points to, is the answer.

He offers limited social engineer insider testing and contracts out. He engages as an Expert Witness, performs R&D and/or is looking for that next Cybercriminal. His services and time is in demand.

He reminds readers that cyber-attacks based on software cover only 10% and the average Company knows about it 300 days after it has occurred. 90% he states is social engineering. You have to look from the inside,” Mr. Smith concludes.

On Wednesday, 14th December, 2016. MINIEYE, a Chinese on-broad visual perception solution provider, held a “KEEP A MINIEYE ON YOU” conference in Beijing. During the conference, CEO Dr. Guoqing Liu, announced the launch of MINlEYE’s first-generation ADAS (Advanced Drivers Assistance System) aftermarket product, which has achieved success in technical benchmarking with global industry leader, Mobileye.

“The successful benchmarking will put an end to Mobileye’s monopoly on ADAS market,” Dr. Liu said.

To help driver better understand the road，MINIEYE emerged. With these advanced vision algorithms independently developed by MINIEYE, MINlEYE’s on-broad mono camera can scan road around and accurately identify a variety of traffic objects, including vehicles, lanes, pedestrians, traffic lights and traffic signs. By analyzing the identified objects, MINIEYE is able to effectively percept rear-end collision, lane departure, pedestrian collision, overspeed and other driving risks，and alert the drive to avoid accidents. During the conference，Dr. Liu showed their first generation aftermarket product, with functions including Headway Monitoring, Forward Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning, Virtual Bumper and Stop & Go. Back to 2013, when MINlEYE’s founding team started the business, there were few people having heard about ADAS in China. In the meantime, Mobileye, an Israeli technology company founded in 1999，has begun its long journey of development into a global leader. So for MINIEYE，Mobileye is considered as an example to learn from.

Since 2014，MINIEYE has constantly conducted road test and accumulated local data. In November，2016，MINIEYE decided to begin the benchmarking compared to Mobileye，by recording both MINIEYE and Mobileye’s products that were installed in the same car.

In Nov, 2016，MINIEYE sent out two vehicles for road test: one departed from MINlEYE’s headquarters in Shenzhen; and the other one departed from Nanjing R&D center. Two testing vehicles have gone through 16 provinces, running over 8909 kilometers, collecting data under different weather and lighting conditions, from cities widely distributed in North China (Harbin), West China (Yunnan) and South China. Dr. Liu stated that MINIEYE knew China better, because it focused on localization from algorithm development, data collection to product design, and has gradually established models which are more suitable for road conditions in China. “When it comes to the strange-looking vehicles, which are unique in China, MINIEYE has better performance than Mobileye.”

This benchmarking road test focused on four primary functions of MINIEYE ADAS products, including Headway Monitoring (HWM), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and Virtual Bumper (VB). Since there is no common standard for benchmarking, MINIEYE adopted rather strict standards to decide whether the outcome should be considered as successful: regarding to FCW, LDW and VB, it required MINIEYE to have a False Positive alarm less than 0.5 times per 100 kilometers, while keeping a high alarm rate that is more than Mobileye’s 95%; regarding to HWM, it required MINIEYE to coincided with Mobileye (that means no more than one unit difference of absolute TTC) under at least 95% of times.

“The result of benchmarking is quite successful,” Dr. Liu stated. “Compared to Mobileye, MINlEYE’s FCW alarm rate achieves Mobileye’s 95.2%, LDW alarm rate is 100.9%, and VB alarm rate is 97.1%. The benchmarking rate of HWM between MINIEYE and Mobileye is up to 96%.”

Dr. Liu mentioned, even though MINIEYE didn’t achieved a 100% coincidence rate with Mobileye，there was no doubt that both products were at the same technical level. “It should be regarded as a breakthrough in China’s ADAS domain，especially when MINIEYE has been proven to have a better performance for China’s unique local traffic scenarios.”

Founded in 2013, MINIEYE devotes itself to leading change in auto industry, by utilizing cutting-edge computer vision technology and providing visual perception system for vehicles. Its predecessor was a development project on Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) funded by the MDA of Singapore government. • Philanthropy as risk capital:  Philanthropic capital is unique. Because philanthropic money is not accountable to shareholders (like businesses) or voters (like politicians), private philanthropy can experiment and take risks – sort of like venture capital – to tackle big challenges and find new solutions.

• Philanthropy by collaboration: There is a rise in collaborative giving, where donors aggregate or pool their capital to focus on specific goals.  They share best practices, eliminate duplication, and use the initiative to motivate other donors to join in.   

• Philanthropy focused on root causes: While there will always be a need to alleviate the suffering of those in immediate need, many global philanthropists are also focusing on tackling root causes of problems versus treating the symptoms.

• Philanthropy driving impact investing: Many global philanthropists are re-visiting the conventional wisdom on endowment management. They are allocating a portion of their endowment capital to impact investing, where an investment achieves both financial and measurable social returns.

New York – 09 May, 2017 – The goal of China’s One Belt One Road Initiative (OBOR) is to link China to the rest of the world by two great arcs of international trade – a land-based ‘belt’ and a maritime ‘road’ stretching west to Europe and Africa and south to Southeast Asia and Australia.

Estimates of the total investment involved range between $US1.4 trillion and $US6 trillion, depending on which projects are included and the timescale used.

At a time of increasingly isolationist political thinking in the West, China’s massive commitment to broadening and deepening its international ties represents a huge opportunity to countries globally.

The development of ports, logistics hubs and other infrastructure across 60 countries is central to the OBOR, and work on joint projects with China is already underway in many partner nations.

Beijing-backed financial institutions such as the New Development Bank, Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank and The Silk Road Fund have a combined financial firepower of $US240 billion ready to commit to OBOR projects, but long-term capital requirements will be far higher.

The vast initiative will run over several generations and its sheer scale and ambition will impact across global initiatives, such as shifting to a lower carbon economy.

According to Worldwide Funding Corp Head of Research, Anders Phillippe, “Joint projects could bring benefits to US companies and Worldwide Funding Corp is already focused on the possibilities.” Take for example General Electric’s operations in Pakistan, orders are more than $1 billion today, compared with less than $100 million five years ago.

According to Phillippe, China hopes to achieve several goals with the OBOR. He added, “China has an excess capacity issue. Global trade isn’t strong enough to absorb all the products China is producing. One Belt One Road is a way for China to create new routes to get its products into its major markets such as America which is its top export destination. At the same time, it allows for greater infrastructure investment as well, connecting up the interior regions of China and expanding economic activity inland – up until now, most growth has tended to be towards the eastern seaboard. But it’s not just limited to China. It extends to anywhere that can allow more connectivity into China or out.

“For America, it offers potential growth opportunities, particularly for American companies that are able to get work tied into any infrastructure projects. Stronger regional trade routes and economies will have a self-reinforcing positive effect on Chinese economy and the world for decades to come. From an American perspective, I can only see a benefit,” says Phillippe.

Los Angeles-based entrepreneur Chuck McCarthy, founder of The People Walker™, is now the subject of award-winning video “The People Walker,” from Circa. Sorry about the terrible play on words or pun or whatever that was,” says founder Chuck McCarthy, who has been the subject of constant media attention since the Circa video hit in September 2016.
